Sungrow Inverter Error Codes Explained

How-To Guides

Sungrow inverter error codes identify grid, solar-panel, battery or internal faults. Record the code and model before deciding whether to wait, restart or call your installer.

Your inverter is showing a fault code, and you need to know whether it is serious or a passing grid event. Some alarms clear automatically, but insulation and arc faults need a different response.

This guide covers common codes by category and explains when to call a licensed electrician. Our Sungrow inverter review for Australian homes covers performance, warranty and value.

If your inverter is beeping or showing a red light without a readable code, the solar inverter beeping and red light troubleshooting guide helps you identify the next check. Keep clear of damaged or wet equipment.

How to find error codes on your Sungrow inverter

The display and alarm wording depend on your model. SG-RS grid-connected units, SH-RS single-phase hybrids, SH-RT three-phase hybrids and older models do not share one universal code list.

  • On models with a screen, use the owner's manual to find the alarm or fault history.
  • In iSolarCloud, select your plant and device, then look for its alarm records. Menu labels vary with the app version and account permissions.
  • On LED-only units, record the light colour and flashing pattern, then use the app or ask your installer for the code. Do not assume flashes represent a numeric code.

Save the full alarm description, timestamp, model and serial number. A code may appear as 2, 002 or 0002; match the description and model as well as the digits.

An app showing an old update time may have a monitoring problem rather than a generation fault. Reconnecting your inverter to WiFi can restore monitoring when the internet connection is the issue.

Grid voltage and frequency Sungrow inverter error codes

Grid voltage and frequency codes indicate that the inverter has detected an unsuitable grid condition. The manufacturer's SG-RS manual groups the following alarms; check your own model's manual before applying a code definition.

CodeMeaning on the models notedHomeowner response
002 / 003 / 014Grid overvoltage on SG-RS; 014 is a 10-minute average overvoltage on some older modelsAllow automatic recovery. Record recurring midday events.
004Grid undervoltage on SG-RSCheck for a reported area outage; contact your installer if persistent.
008 / 009Grid frequency too high / too lowMonitor for recovery and report repeated events.
010Grid power outage; called islanding on some older unitsCheck whether the home has mains power. Do not open the switchboard.
013Abnormal grid conditionRecord the alarm and seek help if it persists.

Code 015 is not a universal undervoltage code: the SH5K-30 manual identifies it as a second-stage overvoltage fault. A model-specific lookup avoids the wrong diagnosis.

If 002 or 014 keeps appearing around midday, your installer can assess grid voltage and voltage rise affecting your residential solar installation. Leave protection and export settings to the installer, who can involve the electricity distributor where required.

DC and insulation fault codes

DC-side faults relate to solar panels, wiring and insulation monitoring. These require more care than a brief grid interruption.

CodeMeaningWhat to do
012Excessive leakage currentRecord wet-weather timing and contact your installer if it persists or recurs.
039Low system insulation resistanceContact your installer for advice; do not inspect rooftop connectors yourself.
021 / 022PV1 / PV2 input overcurrent on SH5K-30; grouped as system faults on SG-RSGive your installer the model and alarm text.
041Leakage-current sampling fault on SH5K-30 and G2 Premium modelsArrange professional diagnosis if it returns.
056Leakage-current protection detected by the secondary controller on G2 PremiumAsk your installer to investigate.

The SH5K-30 troubleshooting manual links 039 with poor insulation or damp conditions. Tell your installer if the alarm appeared during or after rain. A fault disappearing as equipment dries does not prove the wiring is sound.

Never open the inverter, unplug DC connectors or test wiring yourself. Follow your system's labelled shutdown instructions only where safe; leave wet, scorched or damaged switches alone and call a licensed electrician.

Temperature and hardware fault codes

Temperature alarms can appear when cooling is restricted.

  • 036 identifies high radiator temperature on some older units, but SG-RS groups it as a system fault.
  • 037 indicates excessive temperature. From a safe distance, check whether stored items are blocking ventilation.
  • 038 is a grid-side relay fault on SH5K-30 and G2 Premium; other models group it as a system fault.
  • 043 indicates excessively low temperature on some models. Follow the model's recovery instructions.

Do not cover the inverter, spray it with water or open it to clean a fan. If faults recur in ordinary weather, ask your installer to assess airflow, installation position and hardware.

Arc fault and safety codes

Code 088 identifies a PV-side arc fault on SG-RS and G2 Premium models. Treat it as urgent and contact a licensed electrician before any restart.

  • 087 means an arc-detection module abnormality on G2 Premium, rather than a confirmed arc in the wiring.
  • 088 means an arc fault on the PV side.
  • 089 means arc detection is disabled on G2 Premium, rather than a self-test failure.

These distinctions appear in the manufacturer's G2 Premium error-code list. Other generations can classify 087 and 089 differently, so send the full message to your installer.

Do not clear an arc alarm or disable protection to restore generation. If you smell burning, see smoke or hear arcing, keep away; call 000 for a fire or immediate danger and do not approach equipment to operate switches.

Battery and hybrid Sungrow inverter error codes

A hybrid inverter connected to a home solar battery system can report battery, communication and backup faults. Hybrid fault codes include both three-digit battery codes and codes such as 051.

CodeModel-specific meaningHomeowner response
714BMS communication fault on SH-RS and SH5K-30Save the alarm and battery status; leave cable checks to your installer.
703Battery average undervoltage on SH5K-30; grouped as a battery fault on newer SH-RSSeek advice if persistent; do not force-charge or change battery settings to clear it.
716Abnormal battery connection on SH-RSDo not reseat battery cables yourself.
051 / 51Backup/off-grid load overpower on relevant hybrid modelsTurn off unnecessary appliances using their normal controls; call if it persists.

The SH-RS manual, version 21 separates battery alarms from battery faults. Record the exact message rather than diagnosing a failed battery from the number alone.

Our review of Sungrow's SBR and SBH battery range explains the equipment differences. A communication alarm alone does not establish that a battery needs replacing.

How to reset your Sungrow inverter after an error

The reset procedure depends on your inverter and battery combination. Use the shutdown and start-up instructions supplied for your installed system.

  1. Save the alarm details before restarting.
  2. Check the manual and shutdown label. If the sequence is unclear or labels are missing, ask your installer.
  3. Only attempt an owner reset when permitted for that fault and all equipment is dry, undamaged and safely accessible.
  4. Follow the specified switch order and waiting period, including battery instructions where applicable.
  5. Follow the specified start-up order and monitor the alarm. Stop repeating resets if it returns.

Arc, insulation or damaged-equipment warnings need professional advice first. After an authorised restart, check whether your solar inverter is actually working using its indicators and generation data.

When to call a solar professional

A brief grid alarm that clears after an outage can be monitored. Persistent or repeated faults need investigation.

  • Record one-off grid events and confirm generation resumes.
  • Report repeated grid, insulation, temperature, hardware or battery faults to your installer.
  • Seek urgent advice for arc faults, burning smells, damaged equipment or water ingress.

Send the model, serial number, alarm screenshot, time and weather conditions. The manufacturer's end-user troubleshooting guideline asks owners to contact their original installer first.

For recurring faults, professional solar maintenance and repairs can identify the cause before parts are replaced. SolaXs provides local solar support in Port Macquarie and across the Mid North Coast.

Include the alarm details when you contact SolaXs about an inverter fault. The Sungrow inverter product range can help you recognise your model family, but use the model label for diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

What does error code 010 mean on a Sungrow inverter?

Code 010 means grid power outage on SG-RS and SH-RS; older manuals may call it islanding. Check for a mains outage and contact your installer if the code remains when household grid power is available.

Can I reset Sungrow inverter error codes myself?

Only where the system's owner instructions permit it for that fault. Follow its exact switch order and waiting period; seek advice first for arc or insulation faults and never operate damaged switches.

Why does error 039 appear after rain?

Code 039 indicates low insulation resistance, which damp conditions can trigger. Record the weather and seek installer advice, especially if it repeats; drying out does not confirm the fault is repaired.

Are hybrid inverter error codes different?

Yes. Hybrid systems add battery and backup alarms, and even shared numbers can have different descriptions across generations. Match the complete model number and alarm text to the appropriate manual.

How do I check error codes on my phone?

In iSolarCloud, select your plant and inverter and look for alarm records. Save the description and timestamp; if data is stale, ask your installer to check monitoring access.

Should I worry about a single error code?

The type matters more than the count. A brief grid outage alarm may clear normally, while a single arc fault needs urgent professional attention.
