How to Connect Your Fronius Inverter to WiFi

Fronius inverters are some of the most popular solar inverters installed across the Mid North Coast and throughout Australia. Connecting yours to WiFi lets you monitor real-time production, spot faults early, and get the most out of your solar system. At SolaXs we install and service Fronius inverters regularly, and WiFi connectivity issues are one of the most common calls we get.

This guide walks you through connecting your Fronius inverter to your home WiFi network, step by step. It covers Fronius Primo, Symo, and Gen24 models.

What You Need Before You Start

Before touching the inverter settings, make sure you have the following ready:

  • Your home WiFi network name (SSID) and password
  • A smartphone, tablet, or laptop with WiFi capability
  • Access to the Fronius inverter (usually mounted on a garage or laundry wall)
  • The Fronius inverter’s default WiFi password (printed on the rating plate or in the manual – typically “12345678”)
  • A web browser (Chrome, Safari, or Firefox all work)

Tip: Your router needs to be within reasonable range of the inverter. If your inverter is in a detached garage or shed far from the router, you may need a WiFi extender or powerline adapter. We can advise on the best setup for your property – get in touch.

Step 1 – Connect to the Inverter’s WiFi Hotspot

Every Fronius inverter broadcasts its own temporary WiFi network so you can access its settings.

  1. On your phone or laptop, open your WiFi settings.
  2. Look for a network starting with FRONIUS_ followed by a series of numbers (e.g. FRONIUS_240.xxxxx).
  3. Connect to it using the default password. On most Fronius models, the default password is 12345678. Check the sticker on your inverter if this does not work.
  4. Once connected, your device may warn you there is no internet access. That is normal – you are connected directly to the inverter.

Step 2 – Open the Fronius Web Interface

With your device connected to the inverter’s hotspot:

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Type 192.168.250.181 into the address bar and press enter.
  3. The Fronius local web interface should load. If it does not, try http://192.168.250.181 with the http:// prefix.

You should see the Fronius dashboard showing your inverter’s current status and production data.

Step 3 – Navigate to the WiFi Settings

The process differs slightly depending on your Fronius model:

Fronius Primo and Symo (SnapINverter Series)

  1. Click Settings in the left menu.
  2. Select Network.
  3. Under the WLAN section, click Scan to find available WiFi networks.
  4. Select your home WiFi network from the list.
  5. Enter your WiFi password and click Save.

Fronius Gen24 (Primo Gen24 / Symo Gen24)

  1. Click Communication in the top navigation bar.
  2. Select Network from the dropdown.
  3. Under WLAN, switch the connection from Access Point to WLAN Client.
  4. Click Scan and select your home network.
  5. Enter your password and click Connect.

Important: After saving, your device will disconnect from the inverter’s hotspot. This is expected. Reconnect your phone or laptop to your normal home WiFi network to continue.

Step 4 – Verify the Connection

Once your device is back on your home WiFi:

  1. Wait 2-3 minutes for the inverter to connect to your network.
  2. Check your router’s connected devices list. You should see the Fronius inverter listed.
  3. On the inverter itself, the WiFi indicator LED should turn solid green (SnapINverter) or the display should show a connected network icon (Gen24).

If the connection fails, double-check your WiFi password. Fronius inverters only support 2.4GHz networks, not 5GHz. If your router broadcasts both on the same name, you may need to temporarily separate them or create a dedicated 2.4GHz network.

Step 5 – Set Up Fronius Solar.web Monitoring

With your inverter online, you can now set up remote monitoring through Fronius Solar.web. This is free and well worth doing.

  1. Go to solarweb.com and create a free account (or log in if you already have one).
  2. Click Add New System.
  3. Enter your inverter’s serial number, found on the rating plate on the side of the unit.
  4. Follow the prompts to name your system and set your location.
  5. Within a few minutes, your production data should start appearing on the dashboard.

Solar.web shows you daily, weekly, and yearly production data. You can also set up email alerts for faults, which means you will know straight away if something goes wrong with your system.

Common WiFi Connection Problems and Fixes

We see these issues regularly with Fronius WiFi setups across Port Macquarie and the Mid North Coast:

Inverter hotspot not showing up Hotspot disabled or inverter powered off Press and hold the WiFi button on the inverter for 5 seconds to re-enable the hotspot

Connects then drops out Weak WiFi signal at inverter location Move router closer, add a WiFi extender, or install a powerline adapter

  • Your inverter firmware is outdated and needs updating before WiFi will work properly
  • The Datamanager card (on older Fronius models) needs replacing or reconfiguring
  • You are getting persistent connection drops that a WiFi extender has not fixed
  • Your inverter is showing fault codes alongside the WiFi issues
  • You want to integrate your Fronius with a battery storage system and need the network configured correctly for that

When to Call a Professional

Most Fronius WiFi connections are straightforward, but some situations call for professional help. Knowing the difference saves you time and avoids accidentally creating bigger problems with your inverter settings.

If you have followed every step above and your inverter still refuses to connect, the issue is likely deeper than a WiFi password. Here are the scenarios where calling your installer makes sense:

  • The inverter shows error codes on the display these indicate hardware or firmware issues that WiFi troubleshooting will not fix
  • Your inverter firmware is severely outdated older firmware versions sometimes need a direct USB update before WiFi works reliably
  • The Datamanager card is faulty on older Fronius models, the internal communication card can fail and needs physical replacement
  • Your router uses enterprise-grade security (WPA2-Enterprise) Fronius inverters do not support this authentication type
  • The inverter connects but drops out daily this often points to a signal strength issue that needs a WiFi extender or Ethernet adapter installed near the inverter

On the Mid North Coast, many solar power systems have inverters mounted in garages or on external walls far from the router. A weak WiFi signal is the most common cause of persistent connection problems. A simple signal booster or powerline adapter near the inverter usually resolves it permanently.

Troubleshooting Common WiFi Connection Issues

Even after following the setup steps, WiFi dropouts happen. Most connection problems come down to signal strength, router settings, or firmware.

  • Weak signal: If the inverter is more than 10 metres from the router or separated by thick walls, the connection will drop. A WiFi extender or powerline adapter solves this.
  • Router on 5GHz only: Most solar inverters only support 2.4GHz networks. Check your router settings and make sure the 2.4GHz band is enabled.
  • Firmware out of date: Manufacturers push firmware updates that fix connectivity bugs. Check the Fronius monitoring app for available updates.
  • IP conflict: If another device on your network shares the same IP address, the inverter will lose connection. Setting a static IP for the inverter prevents this.
  • Password changed: If you recently changed your WiFi password, the inverter will disconnect. You will need to re-enter the new password through the inverter menu.
