Old Bar is 10 kilometres from Taree, at the eastern end of the Manning Valley. The properties we quote here fall into two groups. Village houses want a straightforward rooftop system with a battery for the evening. The site visit does the real work on a job like this. We check the roof structure and sheeting, the switchboard, the meter, the shading through the day and the distance from the array to wherever the power has to end up. On rural blocks that last measurement matters, because voltage drop across a long run will quietly cost you output for the life of the system.

Storms through summer are the reason a lot of people here add storage. Overhead lines come down, restoration takes time, and a battery with backup wiring keeps the essential circuits running in the meantime. We set the changeover up so it happens automatically, with no switches to find in the dark, and monitoring is configured before we leave the site.

A standalone system is not simply a grid system with batteries bolted on. It has to carry the household through the worst week of the year without help, which means the array, the battery bank and the inverter charger are all sized against real consumption and a realistic run of bad weather.

We start by working out what the property runs and when. Pumps, refrigeration, hot water, workshop tools and any electric vehicle all get counted. From there the design follows, with a generator included as a backstop rather than as something you will be starting every second night.

The federal solar rebate applies to off-grid arrays, and the federal home battery discount applies to the storage side. We lodge both and take them off the quoted figure up front.
