Lorne is hinterland country, which means bigger blocks, taller trees and longer runs between the meter and wherever the panels make the most sense. Shading from mature gums ruins more rural systems than any other single factor, so we map it before we design anything.

Lorne is a rural district rather than a township, and the systems that work here reflect that. Blocks are large, houses sit well back from the road, and there is usually a shed or a second building that can carry part of the array. Power bills tend to be higher than in town because of pumps, workshops and, on some properties, a bore.

A rural install has more moving parts than a suburban one. Cable runs are longer, so voltage drop has to be calculated properly. Switchboards on older homes often need work before an inverter can be connected. Three-phase supply is common on farm blocks and lets us fit a larger inverter than a single-phase house could take. All of that gets checked during the site visit.

Storms are the other consideration. Inland parts of the Mid North Coast get hail and heavy summer downpours, and a system that is mounted properly rides them out. We use rail and clamp systems rated for the wind category of the site and we earth everything to the standard, because a shortcut there shows up years later as a fault nobody can find.

Long overhead lines are a fact of life on hinterland properties, and they are also the reason the power goes off. A branch comes down in a storm and the house is dark for hours while crews work along the line. Battery storage with backup wiring keeps the essential circuits running through that.

For blocks with no connection at all, or where the quoted cost of getting one is unreasonable, we design full off-grid systems. Array, battery bank, inverter charger and a generator for the tail end of a wet week, sized against what the household actually uses rather than a template.

Federal solar rebates apply to these systems, and the federal home battery discount applies to the storage. We handle the claim and take it off the price before you see it.
